O'Gara's Bar & Grill Reaches a Milestone, Celebrating 75 Years
Saint Paul, MN March 2, 2016 - Celebrating 75 years in the bar & restaurant business is an accomplishment in itself, however this year O’Gara’s Bar & Grill will celebrate 75 years in the same location where it all began back in 1941 when Jim O’Gara first opened its doors. In fact, O’Gara’s is the oldest family owned operation of its kind in Saint Paul still at the original location.
In 1972 Tim O’Gara, Jim’s son, took over the business continuing to build upon what his father had started and began to expand, first with The Shamrock Room in 1982 and then O’Gara’s Garage (now The Shanty) in 1985, in an effort to help revitalize the neighborhood, which looked much different than it does today. Tim continued to run O’Gara’s until 2003, when he passed the tradition on to his son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Kris. Dan credits his mother Anna as the backbone of the O’Gara family. While his father Tim was continuing to grow the business on the corner of Selby and Snelling, his mom was instilling family traditions and a strong work ethic to Dan, his brother Tim and sisters Kelly and Molly, who all worked at O’Gara’s growing-up.
A lot of things have changed in 75 years, but what has not are the pillars of the O’Gara’s tradition; family, employees and customers. Dan recalls his dad telling him, “This is a young persons business, listen to the next generation for ideas, but teach them how it works.” That is exactly what Dan and Kris are doing with their kids, Jack, Shea and Kallie the 4th generation of the O’Gara family.
Dan believes O’Gara’s has remained successful by continuing with tradition and establishing relationships within the neighborhood, neighboring businesses, Selby at Snelling Business Association and Union Park District Council. The revitalization of the Selby-Snelling neighborhood with the addition of new local businesses, the Vintage on Selby apartment complex and the upcoming opening of Whole Foods are sure to help the neighborhood grow and the tradition to continue with a new generation.
Although O’Gara’s will be celebrating their 75th Anniversary all year long, in keeping with tradition, the festivities will kick-off March 11 just in time for St. Patrick’s Day by rolling back prices to 1941 on daily specials. This is not only a time to celebrate, but also a time for the O’Gara family to thank the thousands of loyal employees and the millions of faithful customers who have supported the tradition of O’Gara’s Bar & Grill for the last 75 years.
